The worst part of the story occurs in the third act when the true antagonist is revealed for no good reason. Because of the carefree and casual tone throughout, there are no real stakes presented at any point. Because of this, the episode is forced to rely on its comedic skills, which are the safety net below the tightrope that the episode completely ignores, causing the premiere to fall flat on its face like a walker who has mindlessly stepped off a skyscraper.

The second episode, titled "Blair/Gina," is, thankfully, a significant improvement over the first. In point of fact, it's the most impressive of the lot. It uses the same central idea as the first episode, which can be summed up as "let's get weird," but it carries it out in every way that the first episode did not. The episode, which stars Parker Posey and Jillian Bell, trades in the antics of the odd couple for the high concept of the moment, which is a story about a time loop. It's not something anyone would anticipate seeing in the world of The Walking Dead, but the fact that the acting is so good and the writing hits its jokes so well in this second attempt makes it a great episode that stands on its own, even if you've never seen another second of The Walking Dead.

Posey and Bell shine in their roles as an overbearing boss and her fed-up receptionist, respectively, who are coping with daily life at a small Atlanta insurance company in the early days of the zombie pandemic, before people really know what's going on. The setting is in the early days of the zombie pandemic. In light of the recent proliferation of films that are similar to Groundhog Day, the looping plot, which contains elements reminiscent of both Office Space and Ling Ma's Severance (but not that Severance), collapses in on itself in impressive ways. Posey does a wonderful job, and in contrast to Crews in the first episode, it is clear that she is having fun with the part she is playing. The fact that Bell is such a known commodity when it comes to playing a hilarious office worker may result in her role in this episode being underutilized to some degree; however, the episode as a whole is really successful in ways that give hope to the series moving forward.

It is completely out of left field, and just when you might be thinking, "How is this happening in the same world as Rick Grimes and Negan?" the episode leaves room for an escape route. The creative freedom that the episode's writers exercise is The Walking Dead finally delivering on its promise of becoming an anthology. I have no problem with the fact that the series is all over the place; in fact, I think that should be its strength. I can only hope that future episodes of the real oddballs are written as well as this one was, as opposed to the forgettable mess that was the episode that came before it.

The third and final episode that was made available for critique is titled "Amy/Dr. Everett," and it does away with the comedic undertones that were present in the first two episodes. Instead, it maintains a level of seriousness that is more in line with what the series has been known for up to this point, although it does include an intriguing new twist. Dr. Everett is a documentarian as well as a scientist, and he is currently conducting research on the undead, which he refers to as Homo Mortis. He is conducting this research in a valley that contains pockets of walkers that have been cut off from what is left of society. This allows him to conduct his research on the walkers in isolation. Even the first few minutes of the episode consist of a snippet from one of his nature documentaries, in which the narrator educates us about zombies by comparing them to a herd of African bush elephants. After he comes across a survivor named Amy who is separated from the rest of her group, the episode essentially devolves into a prolonged philosophical discussion about the relationship between nature and human intervention.

This episode, similar to other times when The Walking Dead has tried to overtly make philosophical claims, such as the seasons upon seasons of Morgan arguing about retributive versus restorative justice, is not some remarkable thinkpiece on the blight that humanity has caused on the natural world, nor is it an immensely thoughtful character study on loneliness and group belonging. It does both of those things, but ultimately serves best as a springboard for interested viewers to look elsewhere for more in-depth material, which is fine in my book.
